What Types Of Industrial Abrasives Are Available?

Industrial Abrasives are used for transforming a smooth surface to a rough one or rough to a smooth one. Also, these can be used to remove contaminants from the surface of a body. Rubbing of two hard surfaces, one that of the abrasive and another of the workpiece, polishes or refines the workpiece that can be jewelry item or food material like rice, etc. Since Industrial Abrasives are hard minerals they wear out the parts of the workpiece to give it a smooth finish. Abrasives find application in different industries including Glass industry, Automobile industry, Food industry, etc. There are different types of Industrial Abrasives such as Bonded Abrasives and Coated Abrasives.

Bonded Abrasives: Bonded Abrasives contain a mixing agent called binder. Abrasives stick with this binder and are then used. This binder can be a resin, rubber compound, clay, wax, etc. This kind of abrasive is available in different shapes and structures such as rectangular or circular block pieces. The abrasives that fall under this category are aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, etc. Bonded Abrasives need regular maintenance such as dressing and truing. Dressing means to clean up the abrasive surface so that it can be exposed to fresh grit. While truing means to bring back the original shape of the abrasive in order to prevent uneven polishing and refining.
Polishing & Buffing - Polishing and buffing are finishing processes for smoothing a workpiece's surface using an abrasive and a work wheel. Technically polishing refers to processes that use an abrasive that is glued to the work wheel, while buffing uses a loose abrasive applied to the work wheel. Polishing is a more aggressive process while buffing is less harsh, which leads to a smoother, brighter finish. A common misconception is that a polished surface has a mirror bright finish, however most mirror bright finishes are actually buffed. For buffing various types of solid and liquid buffing compounds are used. The first stage starts with a rough abrasive and each subsequent stage uses a finer abrasive until the desired finish is achieved. The rough pass removes surface defects like pits, nicks, lines and scratches. The finer abrasives leave very thin lines that are not visible to the naked eye. And the final compound removes all the lines and finally gives a mirror or chrome like finish. When buffing there are two types of buffing motions: the cut motion and the color motion. The cut motion is designed to give a uniform, smooth, semi-bright surface finish. This is achieved by moving the workpiece against the rotation of the buffing wheel, while using medium to hard pressure. The color motion gives a clean, bright, shiny surface finish. This is achieved by moving the workpiece with the rotation of the buffing wheel, while using medium to light pressure. Buffing may be done by hand with a stationary polisher or die grinder, or it may be automated using specialized equipment. Coated Abrasives:
As the name suggests, in Coated Abrasives, abrasives are coated on the surface of material such as paper, cloth, etc. One of the most common examples of Coated Abrasive is the sandpaper. Usually, the abrasives used are finely crushed minerals similar to that used in Bonded Abrasives. These Abrasives are fixed on to the material that acts as a back support. Here, the amount of abrasion required can be controlled manually by increasing or reducing the pressure.

There are other types of abrasives also such as sand or dry ice. These are used in sandblasting application to shape, make surface smooth or rough as per the requirement. Calcium carbonate is another softer abrasive that is used in toothpastes. It is soft, and hence enamel of the tooth is not damaged despite regular use.
